Security
Some Tips and Advice on staying Safe and Secure. How to avoid becoming a victim of Burglary, Computer Fraud, Rape and Violent Assault.
Elevator Security:
Whenever possible position yourself close to the controls. be ready to press the alarm and next landing buttons
Abduction:
If you are forced in to a car, or the driver is not stopping to let you out then it is essential to force a crash. It may sound too extreme but it is the response recommended by the experts. Do it before he gets up to speed and try to crash in to a parked car. Your life is likely to be at stake!!
CCTV Security
Want to convert your PC into a DVR? Well you can, simply by installing a PCI card into the back of your computer and using included software that comes with 123 CCTV, Security Camera Equipment. So if your traveling, and desire to monitor your camera photo's remotely, be sure to check this information out.
Car Theft Scheme.
Here's what they do: You return to your car left in a car park, unlock your car and get inside, start the engine and shift into REVERSE and when you look into the rear view mirror to back out of your parking space you notice a piece of paper stuck to the middle of the rear window.
So, you either switch off the car or leave the engine running and jump out of your car to remove that paper (or whatever it is) that is obstructing your view... When you reach the back of the car that is when the hi-jackers appear out of nowhere, jump into your car and take off!
The door was unlocked, your keys were in the ignition, maybe the engine was running, (ladies would have probably left their handbag, with their purse, mobile phone etc; in the car) and they practically mow you down as they speed off in your car.
BEWARE OF THIS NEW SCHEME THAT IS NOW BEING USED!!! Should this happen to you, just drive away and remove the piece of paper that is stuck to your window later....and be thankful that you read this.
If you think it appropriate, tell your friends and family...especially women!
A purse contains all identification, and you certainly do NOT want anyone getting your home address. They already have your keys!
I say look to see if there is anything on your car first then you can take it off before u even get in.. Margaretta P.
Credit Cards Security:
Never e-mail your credit card details, a reputable company will never ask for this information over the internet unless it is using secure software. A small padlock symbol is usually enough to indicate that the form provided is secure. The URL will also be different from the usual one in that it will start off with https:// instead of just http://. It will have the extra "s".
If your cards are stolen you must be quick off the mark in contacting your bank or the credit card company. Keep the numbers stored on your mobile. It could save you a lot of time, trouble, and money.
ATM Security:
If you feel that the person or people behind you in the queue are too close and may be a threat, then cancel the transaction and move away. Do not wait for a situation to develop. Better safe than sorry.
Passwords:
You should never divulge passwords over the Internet or a telephone. If you have lost yours then it is normal to be given a new one.
Telephone Security:
Do not have your first name in the phone book, this is particularly important for women.
Secure Your home:
Always change the locks on the door if you are moving in to a new home. Outside lights will help deter a would-be burglar.
Over 95% of burglaries take place in homes where there are no burglar alarms fitted. Another statistic is that over 40% of burglaries occur when the house is occupied.
Women's Security:
Do not look like a victim! Walk tall. If you are being harassed then let the him know that you are not going to give him an easy time. Use body language, aggressive eye contact and finger pointing and If the harassment turns in to an actual assault then use your voice SCREAM SCREAM and SCREAM AGAIN and if possible have a good personal attack alarm handy. Kick and hit as hard as you can and hit him where he is most vulnerable. If he attacks from behind hit backwards with your elbows. If he gets you on the ground use your feet. Use shock tactics such as asking him what his mother would think "if she could see you now"?
If you have been the victim of an rape contact the police as soon as possible, get to a hospital that has rape kits. Take full advantage of all the support available, get counselling. In the extremely fragile state you are in after such an attack the police may seem threatening or insensitive but they are on your side and will ensure that you get proper treatment and care.
A rape kit can not be argued with. DNA evidence ALWAYS works in such cases. Help catch the low-life before he has a chance to do it to someone else. A rapist is one of the lowest forms of human life and needs to be locked away.
If you are being assaulted and there are people within earshot then instead of shouting 'RAPE' or 'HELP' you should shout 'FIRE. That way you will have much more chance of people coming to your assistance. It is a sad fact that in our cities people no longer help others if there is a risk to themselves.
Finally, if you see someone acting suspiciously then make sure that you are not in danger yourself and inform the police or security.
A loud whistle is a good alternative to an attack alarm. Train your child to recognize the sound so that if she or he gets lost then the sound will guide her to you.
Subject: FW: Credit Card Scam - BE Aware
I received the following information from a member of staff and having had a need to talk to visa last week on a similar incident, I can confirm that this is happening. At this time of year approaching Christmas, please take note and be aware.
"Please pass on to all people on your mailing list. I got this from a contact in the Halifax Visa team so it is happening!!
A friend was called on the telephone this week from 'VISA' and I was called on Thursday from 'MasterCard'.
It worked like this: Person calling says, 'this is Carl Patterson (any name) and I'm calling from the Security and Fraud Department at VISA. My Badge number is 12460. Your card has been flagged for an unusual purchase pattern, and I'm calling to verify. Did you purchase an Anti-Telemarketing Company a device/any expensive item, for £497.99 from a marketing company based in (any town?)
When you say 'No'. The caller continues with, 'Then we will be issuing a credit to your Account. This is a company we have been watching and the charges range from £297 To £497, just under the £500 purchase pattern that flags most cards. Before your next statement, the credit will be sent to (they give you your address), is that correct?'
You say, 'Yes'. The caller continues . . 'I will be starting a fraud investigation. If you have any questions, you should call the 0800 number listed on your card and ask for Security. You will need to refer to this Control number. They then give you a 6-digit number. 'Do you need me to read it again?'
Caller then says he 'needs to verify you are in possession of your card '(this is where the scam takes place as up until now they have requested nothing!). They then ask you to turn your card over.
There are numbers; the first 4 are 1234 (or whatever, as they have you number anyway). The next 3 are the security numbers that verify that you are in possession of the card' (these are the numbers they are really after as these are the numbers you use to make internet purchases to prove you have the card).
'Read me the 3 numbers.' When you do he says 'That is correct. I just needed to verify that the card has not been lost or stolen, and that you still have your card. Do you have any other questions? Don't hesitate to call back if you do.'
You actually say very little, and they never ask for or tell you the card number. But after we were called on Wednesday, we telephoned back within 20 minutes to ask a question. Are we glad we did! The REAL VISA security department told us it was a scam and in the last 15 minutes a new purchase of £497.99 WAS put on our card. Long story made short.
We made a real fraud report and closed the VISA card and they are reissuing us a new number. What the scam wants is the 3-digit number and that once the charge goes through, they keep changing every few days. By the time you get your statement, you think the credit is coming, and then it's harder to actually file a fraud report.
THE REAL VISA/MASTERCARD DEPARTMENT REINFORCED THE POINT THAT THEY WILL NEVER ASK FOR ANYTHING ABOUT THE CARD SINCE THEY ALREADY KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT IT!!!!.
What makes this even more remarkable is that on Thursday I got a call from 'Jason Richardson of MasterCard' with a word for word repeat of the VISA Scam. This time I didn't let him finish. I hung up. We filed a police report (as instructed by VISA), and they said they are taking several of these reports daily and to tell friends, relatives and co-workers so please pass this on to your friends. -- Craig Laird Eurocom London
Considering moving in to a new neighborhood? Take a walk in the area and take note of how many ground floor flats and dwelling have installed grills - As a long time security professional I always look for things like that. A run down area is not always the most crime targeted. Richard Beiden Atlanta Georgia
Computer Security Tip: Using a special radio receiver it is possible for people to read what's displayed on your monitor but only if it is of the cathode ray type, flat screens are immune to the problem, in situations requiring high security always use flat screens, it is also possible to find special filters to put on your monitor that only allow someone immediately in front of the screen to see what is being displayed. - Shaun Kaye Vauxhall London England
